Apostoli designs the new medical area at Terme Preistoriche Resort & SPA: Inaugurating the new Thermal Treatments, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department

The new expansion of the wellness complex, developed in response to the latest sector requirements, has opened in recent days.

Seven years after the inauguration of Neró Spa New Experience – an advanced wellness centre where art, wellbeing and local culture converge – and just three years following the opening of Preistoriche Green Lodge, the zero-emission suites immersed in nature, Apostoli returns to Terme Preistoriche Resort & SPA to design the new Thermal Treatments, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department. The project marks a further phase in the expansion of the hospitality complex in Montegrotto Terme, at the heart of the Euganean Hills.

Recently inaugurated, the new medical area is arranged over two levels, covering a total surface area of 550 sqm, and is dedicated to therapeutic, physiotherapy and rehabilitation treatments. These are delivered through personalised protocols tailored to the specific needs of each guest and overseen by highly specialised professionals.

Entirely designed by Apostoli, the department references the interiors of the historic Art Nouveau inspired building and enables the Resort to welcome a broader and more diverse clientele. The new offering introduces curative and medical treatments that integrate the thermal tradition of the territory with advanced technologies and bespoke therapeutic pathways.

“The wellness sector is in constant evolution, and its offering must necessarily adapt – not only to the specific needs of guests and the objectives of each individual property, but also to the distinctive characteristics of the territory,” comments Alberto Apostoli, founder and creative director of Apostoli Wellness Creators. He continues: “The availability of the hyperthermal waters of the Euganean Spas and of Mature Natural Thermal Mud – a European patent whose medical efficacy is also recognised by the World Health Organization – represents a unique asset for Terme Preistoriche Resort & SPA, and for us a stimulating point of departure that defined the project’s conceptual framework.”

Mature thermal mud becomes the key design driver for the new department. Its cultivation process, entirely artisanal in nature, is made visible through large glazed surfaces that define the relaxation lounge, which directly overlooks the maturation pools. The territory – with its traditions and distinctive landscape features – is continuously interwoven with the interior design, characterised by material layering, neutral and desaturated tones, and warm, indirect lighting calibrated in harmony with natural daylight. This filters through the generous openings punctuating the building envelope and contributes to the regulation of guests’ circadian rhythms.

The new Thermal Treatments, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department thus offers an enveloping and refined environment, defined by timber wall panelling alternating with nature-inspired wallpapers, enriched by acid-etched metal slats and complemented by bespoke furnishings. Custom-designed elements with organic inspiration – including the reception desk and the seating in the waiting area – are paired with circular decorative lighting features that articulate the space.

The treatment rooms dedicated to the various therapies adopt a more restrained and minimalist language. Here, large-format decorative porcelain stoneware, metal and glass define both the interiors and the thresholds towards the surrounding park, while material-effect wallpapers alternate with solid colour surfaces. A strong reference to clearly defined geometries is echoed in the ceiling panelling, furnishings and professional equipment.

“The building is the result of complementary layers, with harmonious interventions added over time, and is now defined by a new element shaped by the latest wellness technologies. This is how we have expressed our design vision for Terme Preistoriche Resort & SPA, a place we know well,” explains Alberto Apostoli. “It is a place of wellbeing not only in terms of its services and offerings, but also in its ability to integrate with sensitivity and respect into the surrounding morphology.”

“With this new treatment department, we are breaking conventions – in design, in protocols, and in our overall approach,” says Angela Stoppato, Chief Executive Officer of Terme Preistoriche Resort & SPA. She continues: “Every choice is conceived to innovate while deepening the relationship between people, nature, and care. The light entering through the large windows of the changing rooms follows circadian cycles. The materials narrate the land. The relaxation lounge, designed to elevate the time dedicated to treatment, invites contemplation of the ancestral and artisanal practice of mud cultivation. Over the next two years, we will take this language even further: we will not only enhance the appearance of the mud cultivation pools but transform them into a spectacle, allowing them to finally take centre stage in the thermal treatments of the largest thermal basin in Europe – where they truly belong.”

The inauguration of the new Thermal Treatments, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department therefore defines a new chapter in the evolution of the Resort, which has also recently undergone refurbishment of its accommodation – 47 rooms in total – and its communal dining areas, all directly connected to the surrounding 50,000-sqm park.
